
Stresa - Mergozzo
A scenic ride between two lakes
The Stresa–Mergozzo route is one of the most enjoyable cycling itineraries on Lake Maggiore. Perfect for e-bikes, mountain bikes and city bikes, it combines peaceful cycle paths, protected nature reserves and charming lakeside villages, making it suitable for cyclists of all abilities.
During spring, the route becomes even more spectacular as colourful camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas bloom along the way, creating one of the most beautiful cycling experiences around Lake Maggiore.

Route Description
Leaving the centre of Stresa, follow the road towards Verbania until you reach Fondotoce, where the dedicated cycle path begins.
The route crosses the Fondotoce Nature Reserve, one of the largest protected wetlands on Lake Maggiore and an area recognised for its ecological importance throughout Europe. Cycling alongside the Toce River, you'll enjoy peaceful landscapes of reed beds, woodland and open meadows while listening to birdsong and spotting local wildlife.
The cycle path leads to the picturesque village of Mergozzo, overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Mergozzo, one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. Its charming lakeside promenade is the perfect place to relax before continuing your ride.
For the return journey, you can either retrace the same route back to Stresa or continue around Lake Mergozzo via the scenic Blue Trail, before rejoining the Fondotoce cycle path.
The entire route is clearly marked with magenta arrows, making navigation easy even for first-time visitors.

The Fondotoce Nature Reserve is home to the largest reed bed on Lake Maggiore and provides a protected habitat for numerous bird species, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals, making this route especially rewarding for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
